PART IX– A FESTIVE DAY
Given the nature of Sunday Mass and its importance in the lives of the faithful, it must be prepared with special care. In ways dictated by pastoral experience and local custom in keeping with liturgical norms, efforts must be made to ensure that the celebration has the festive character appropriate to the day commemorating the Lord’s Resurrection. (Pope John Paul II, Dies Domini, 50).
WORDS TO LIVE BY
At Sunday Mass, the songs we sing and the gestures we use all lead us to the same point: communion with each other and with the Lord. It is a solemn moment, yes, but it is also one of great joy. We are all called to take an active part in what goes on at Sunday Mass. It is not our task to merely show up and sit by idly, waiting for the Mass to end, as some do. Though we are called to active participation, there is one role that only an ordained priest can fulfill: presiding at the liturgy itself. There is a clear distinction between taking an active part in liturgy and leading the prayer. And yet all of us take part because of our baptism. By baptism, we are made children of God and we share what is called a “common priesthood”. With the priest, we, too, offer the sacrifice and take an active part in the liturgy.
FOR REFLECTION
What more active role can you play in the liturgy in your parish? It might be reading, singing, or serving; but it might also be getting involved in the many ministries of the parish.
YOUR COMMITMENT
This week, find one way you can increase the way you participate at Mass and be ready to offer that to your your parish community. + Blessings!
