The Lord’s Day – as Sunday was called from Apostolic times – has always been accorded special attention in the history of the Church because of its close connection with the very core of the Christian mystery. (Pope John Paul II, Dies Domini, #4)
WORDS TO LIVE BY
We keep Sunday holy because on this day, we remember the Easter mysteries! Indeed Sunday recalls the resurrection itself. Week by week, we return to this marvelous mystery of our faith! Like those two disciples on their way to Emmaus, the ones who felt their hearts burning within them as they came to understand faith (Luke 24:28-33), so we likewise have the opportunity each week to experience the presence of the Risen Christ. We have the chance to sit at his feet in the Liturgy of the Word, and then to share in His very own supper! As Eusebius of Alexandria said in one of his sermons, “the Lord’s day” is “the lord of days.” Indeed!
FOR REFLECTION
Think back to how you spent last Sunday. How much of the day was devoted to the Lord? In what ways did your observance of this day increase your awareness of God? Was it for you “the lord of days”?
YOUR COMMITMENT
